The widening of a mile of Highway 5 in Sunrise Beach begins Monday and could be done as early as December.

Hill Brothers out of Platte City will begin working on the road Monday morning, adding a middle lane to Highway 5 from F Road north. Village Planner Roger Corbin says the crews already have a strategy.

"They start at the north end on the west side, the west lane," Corbin said. "They'll grade that lane and they'll have traffic control on that lane. They'll pave that side on the west side all the way to F Road as they work through it. Once the west side is paved they'll start on the north end again, go down the east side of the road this time. Traffic control will switch to the other lane and they'll go all the way to F Road."

Corbin says the company has until summer of 2010 to complete the road but Hill Brothers says it may not take that long.

"The original time frame, their contract goes until May but their PERT chart, which is their engineering chart that shows when they are going to do everything, shows that they should be done by the 7th of December."

The project was originally going to be funded entirely by the village.  After applying, Sunrise Beach was awarded over $800,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money for the project.
