The second Lake of the Ozarks Shootout at Captain Ron's tops its 2008 fundraising total.

The 21st annual Shootout on the west side suffered some sponsorship cutbacks in 2009, but some new additions, like a golf tournament, charity auction, and a poker run, helped offset the costs.

Captain Ron's owner Ron Duggan says all events added up to a larger contribution.

"We had about $41,000 we donated last year and this year we are really excited with our number," Duggan said. "In spite of the economy, we raised $50,877.56 and that is split among fifteen different benefactors."

Duggan says funds will be divided among the fifteen groups based on how many of the over 3,800 volunteer hours the groups contributed.

"The Boy Scouts, the Lake Ozark Shriners Club, the Laurie Sunrise Beach Rotary Club, Habitat for Humanity, Share the Harvest, the Laurie Elks Club, the Lake West Chamber of Commerce," Duggan said laying out who benefitted.  "Then we had eight fire districts that were involved this year, the Gravois Mills Fire Protection District, Osage Beach, Mid-County, Lake Ozark, Sunrise Beach, Coffman Bend, Northwest and Cross Timbers."

The weekend boat race drew some criticism from nearby dock owners, who claimed that large wakes from the spectator fleet cost them thousands of dollars in needed repairs.  Duggan says steps will be taken next year to alleviate the problem.

"Some of the complaints that we have gotten are the rough water right around the 31 MM when you make that turn toward the course up there," Duggan said. "We've already visited with the water patrol and they are going to allow us to go in there and make some adjustments to our permit to where we can go in and extend that no wake buoy on out a little bit further so that we can cut down on some of the dock damage that is going on downstream when people are turning that corner."

The 2009 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout drew an estimated $70,000 spectators.
