An entire 274 acre lake north of Kansas City is shut down due to E. coli contamination.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has closed Weatherby Lake in Weatherby, Missouri after a sewer bypass in Platte County.
Late Wednesday the Kansas City Public Works department says a power failure caused one of its lift stations to go offline. While the pumps were off, approximately 1,000 gallons of sewage escaped a manhole and flowed to nearby Weatherby Lake. MoDNR crews tested the waters and samples showed e coli contamination of ten times the federal maximum for swimming beaches.
MoDNR says although this was a relatively low volume bypass compared to the size of the 274 acre lake, residents are encouraged to avoid contact with the lake water until further notice. |
